He made more than 150 appearances for Watford as well as almost 100 outings for Hartlepool United. He also played for Ipswich Town, Bradford City, Notts County and Barnet amongst others.

He posted on social media: “It was always my dream to be a professional footballer and I’m one of the lucky ones who got to live their dream.

"I’m very fortunate to have worked with some incredible players, play over 500 games for some great clubs and represent my country.”

Since leaving Chesterfield for Derby County two years ago, Loach has got into coaching and he intends to focus on that now.

He added: "I’ve found a passion for coaching and I now believe it’s the best thing for my future and my family’s future to step away from the playing side and attack the next chapter of my career as a coach.”
